In order to manage the success and popularity of a web site, it needs to be designed to cope with a growing number of users. A site designed to support 50 concurrent users can't serve thousands of simultaneous visitors without collapsing. Thus, the very success of a web site could also be the cause of its failure, if it is not able to sustain the sudden and exponential growth in number of users or requests.
A recent study by Computing & Double Take revealed that 83% of UK organisations admit downtime of several hours or more. Even if you manage to avoid a complete collapse, users will not stick around on a slow-loading site. The ability to grow (and shrink!) depending on need or availability thus becomes critical, directly affecting your revenue stream. A system that's able to cope with this changing demand is called scalable. Ga door met lezen van "Scalability: People, Processes, Technology" Sunday, 26 October 2008Quality People
At Ibuildings we are constantly on the lookout for high quality people, who want to get involved in a variety of complex projects (and maybe some simpler ones). Although quality is hard to define, recently we have not just been looking for a long list of skills and experience, but also candidates who have the potential to play with the big boys, people who feel they can, one day, contribute at the highest level.
This has been an interesting exercise, although frustrating, sorting out the wheat from the (sometimes megalomaniac) chaff. The idea is that we are trying to 'spot' people early in their career, who have the right attitude and capacity for learning. Why am I blogging this? Well, as we are currently a growing business, we need good people NOW. But also, in the longer term, we want to be aware of the good people out there in the community, and to be on mutual radars even if it doesn't look like we need people at that very minute. It seems that on our 'PHP' projects, good Javascript skills are needed more often than not these days, and some of it is extremely complex and demanding. Are you one of those 'people with potential' out there? Speak to us, get on our radar, and one day the timing might be right for us both. Friday, 7 March 2008Other customers and projects
A few years ago we worked for other customers, had fewer projects and a smaller geographic workfield than today. Today we operate in the whole country and also in Belgium, the UK and Scandinavia. We obviously have expanded our work field. Furthermore the assignments we do today have a shorter lead time, are larger and more complex than before.
A few years ago we focused more on the development. We started an assignment without or with only a small description of the required functionality. Today we are really convinced that a project won't succeed without a comprehensively functional and technical design. When we noticed the need of the designs we specialized developers in this initial part of an assignment . We also added the design phases, functional and technical, to our standard process. For several years Ibuildings is known as a partner in PHP development projects for our clients. Last year the type of customers and the type of projects have changed. Several 'New media' customers found their way to Ibuildings and asked for specific custom made front-end and back-end solutions within a fixed budget and time scale.

Introduction
As a former active member of the community website phpfreakz.nl I still tend to pay this site a visit every once in a while. Phpfreakz.nl is a Dutch forumsite which concentrates on webdevelopment and, obviously, PHP in particular. The majority of phpfreakz's user base exists of novices and hobbyists, supported and pushed into the right directions by helpful advanced members or even professionals. Activities around phpfreakz.nl are growing lately and this year the board even organized their first congress on which Ibuildings held a presentation as well.
