Together with Ivo Jansch, our CTO at Ibuildings, we are attending the Zend/PHP Conference in San Francisco this week. This is the third annual Zend/PHP conference and as the largest gathering of PHP users, it shows the phenomenal growth of PHP as the choice for modern applications. Harold Goldberg, the CEO of Zend Technologies looked at some numbers during his keynote talk. Right now, 32% of internet applications are build with PHP by over 4.5 million PHP developers, which makes it the most popular language for internet applications out there.
But there's also a new trend looking forward; More and more companies will be exposing their back-end information systems to answer customer demand. PHP is the flexible choice for these modernizations into powerful state-of-the-art web applications. So the question is why not write your next business-critical application in PHP? With many showcases of companies utilizing the power behind PHP, this conference certainly shows that PHP is going to play a leading role in the coming years in the Internet community. Tom Sunday, 30 September 2007Ibuildings International!
After building a solid company here in the Netherlands for the past 8 years, we are now ready to take the company to the next level: Ibuildings has now become Ibuildings International, with main offices in the Netherlands and United Kingdom.
Our mission is to deliver PHP Software Services and Products for the enterprise market in Europe. By expanding to the UK we will be able to deliver to UK companies the PHP expertise we've build here in the Netherlands. We will focus on delivering the right mix of software tools, methods, experience and knowledge to more and more companies that are investing in PHP technology for their business critical systems. It's an exiting time for all of us both witnessing the HUGE growth of PHP usage in small, medium and very large companies around Europe, and to be part of that growing business community. Next week I'll be attending the Zend/PHP Conference in San Francisco to learn how PHP is growing worldwide, and I look forward to sharing the highlights on this blog! Last week I read about the functions imagegrabscreen() and imagegrabwindow(). They were added to gdlib and are available in PHP since version 5.2.2. Because I got excited I installed the latest version of WAMP5 on my windows XP laptop (the functions are windows-only) and started typing. The examples on php.net however will not work at first when you use WAMP out-of-the-box, so this is a little how-to document about how to get it working.

When building applications on an IBM i-series platform you probably want to use the DB2 database. Zend Core for IBM i-series supports this database since the db2_ functions were introduced. These functions allow you to use the DB2 database like you would any other database, but lacks the support for manipulating librarylists. It turns out this is possible by using the i5_ functions. Below an example of how to do so.
