Thanks Stefan for this post. I was wondering, how do you feel about the latest version of Symfony compared to Zend Framework? How do extensively do you use Symfony at iBuildings being a partner with Zend? What criteria do you use to choose between the two when working on a new project?
Thanks.
Hello Ziad,
Thanks for your comment. You have a good set of questions! Let me try to answer your questions: Symfony 1.2 vs Zend Framework: This is actually very hard to do, because of the nature of the different frameworks. It depends highly on the project, and it has always been that way. This is how we approach it. We look at the project and the developers that will be working on the project, and then select the framework/tool for the project. Symfony usage/Zend partnership: The Zend partnership does not force us to use a certain framework. If we choose for a framework other than symfony, this is not because of the partnership, but because it just fits the project better in the eyes of the person making the technical decision. Having said that, we've so far mainly done symfony work for web development agencies with a symfony project or taking over management of existing codebases. Criteria for choosing: There's many criteria, and we don't even choose only between Zend and symfony. We also have projects in Code Igniter, Wordpress, ATK, our own CMS WDE, and many other (open source) toolsets. The most important criteria I guess are "is it the right tool for the job" and "what does the client want". But there's so much more involved in picking a toolset, that I can't really list everything here.
But Stefan, please do list as much as you can, maybe create a new blog post.
This would be something really useful, for us, the lesser ones, to see how professionals weight their toolsets.
I second iongion's post, it would be great if you could give us a bullet point list of the main good/bad/ugly points of each framework.
Or perhaps you could briefly describe what type of projects/applications are good for each of the frameworks. Thanks. |
